PRODUCTION DESIGNER    /    DESIGN CONSULTANT

In November, 2007, my colleague, Dave Scott, and I were invited to design and oversee construction of a main suite at the renowned IceHotel in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden.  The hotel is constructed each year from massive ice blocks harvested from the neighboring Torne Alv (Torne River).  Under the guidance of artist director of the hotel, Arne Bergh, the 2007/2008 design team was comprised of artists from all over the world

 

The nearly month-long process proved an incredible creative experience.  Ice is  a medium like no other...it engages the artist on its own terms.  The results are ethereal and sculptural wonders--spaces that are living, light-refracting, inspirational shelters until the thaw of April returns the entire hotel back to Torne Alv.
